Kellsey & Joey’s Casual, Boho Wedding at Hawthorne House
When a wedding day begins with mimosas, breakfast burritos, and even a Fireball shot for the guys, you know one fabulous celebration is in store at the Hawthorne House in Parkville, Missouri!
Right from the beginning of my time working with Kellsey and Joey, I knew they were going to come ready to planning meetings to dream up a wedding that I, along with their guests, would never forget. After all, they were incredibly organized and knew exactly what they wanted. Talk about dream clients! Not to mention, they opted for a more non-traditional vibe--one that was unique and 100% them to a T.
While it’s difficult to pick just a few of the most memorable details from their unforgettable day, I’ll narrow down the list so as not to give too much away. From the emotional first look with Kellsey’s dad and soon-to-be-husband to the ceremony filled with so much love, hand-crafted photo booth backdrop, delicious food and late night snacks, and packed dance floor, everyone came together for one big party and celebrated the “Best Day Ever” with the happy couple!
All that to say, I’m sure you’re eager to hear Kellsey’s take on her and her husband’s casual, boho wedding! Enjoy reading and getting inspired by all the details that were so beautifully captured by Kindling.
How did you two meet? How did he pop the question? Tell us your love story.
We met over eight years ago at Rockhurst University while planning a St. Paddy's day party for our fraternity and sorority. After graduating together, getting our first jobs together, and moving into an apartment together, Joey (along with the help of two sneaky friends) surprised me on a gorgeous day at a park where he popped the question. Afterward, we went to Boulevard Beer Hall where friends and family were waiting for us to celebrate. It was amazing.
Describe your wedding vibe in one sentence.
Casual, bohemian, natural vibes with good food, good music and all our of favorite people in one place.
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding?
250
Where did you allocate the most funds?
Venue, open bar, DJ, and food.
Where did you allocate the least funds?
Cake and decor.
What was totally worth it?
Everything was perfect. The venue was amazing and allowed us to save some money on the decor because it was beautiful on its own. Having a good DJ changed the entire atmosphere of the night! And, we went with a cake that tasted amazing (Whole Foods Chantilly Cake) vs. how it looked, and we saved money, and everyone loved it!
Share a few things that helped you along the way with planning a wedding.
TheKnot.com, Google Docs, and McKenzie's planning expertise.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them.
“Where Is My Mind” by Maxence Cyrin. I walked down the aisle to this song, which is a remake of the Pixies version. I always envisioned walking down the aisle to this and when the moment happened it literally took my breath away!
“Send Me On My Way” by Rusted Root. It’s the perfect fun song to exit the ceremony to.
“Beyond” by Leon Bridges. This was our first dance song, and a song we discovered together early in the year that we loved listening to on Saturday mornings while drinking coffee.
“Into the Mystic” by Van Morrison. This is our family jam and made perfect sense to use for the Father/Daughter dance.
Did you have something borrowed, something blue, something old, and something new? If so, do tell!
Something new was my dress and my something old was my grandmother's ring who passed away when I was one.
Share your best practical advice to a soon-to-be bride.
Don't sweat the small stuff. Guests will NOT notice if you opted out of having the gold silverware. I know everyone also says this - but, TRY to take it slow and absorb the whole day. It went by WAY TOO FAST.
What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together?
A big move! Not sure if it will be buying a house or moving to a new city, but we are excited to figure that out together. And, more traveling! Our honeymoon to Greece inspired us to do way more traveling.
Let us know one thing that WOWed you while working with McKenzie Phillips.
How smooth the day went! I decided on Saturday morning that I would stop caring about the small details and just have fun. McKenzie and her team allowed me to do that!
