Shelby and Jordan’s Bohemian Chic Celebration at The Legacy at Green Hills

This down-to-earth couple was so fun to work with during their entire engagement as a full-service client of McKenzie Phillips Events! In spending so much time with Shelby, I had the pleasure of truly getting to know her and her life with Jordan.

And, being the independent and free-spirited woman that she is, Shelby was so open to new ideas and wanting something different than what’s trending. She genuinely wanted to make her event as unique as it possibly could be—combining a mixture of traditional and non-traditional elements.

What made it easier for her to do just that? Her supportive sidekick Jordan, who, when asked questions throughout the planning process by Shelby, was always quick to respond with, “Whatever you want, babe.” That said, I could definitely tell that all he wanted was to marry his bride, and for her to have the wedding of her dreams! (cue the *Awww*)

Now, fast forward to their outdoor summer wedding at The Legacy at Green Hills, and it honestly was a DREAM. Come. True. From the beautiful 85-degree forecast to the floral head crowns the bridal party rocked, sunset snapshots in the daisy field, a live band, endless libations, and late night food (hellooo pizza!), Shelby and Jordan threw one big, unforgettable party they, along with their guests, will never, ever, ever forget.

“I always tell people that my wedding day exceeded all my expectations. It's a weird feeling to work months and months on something and then that day is there and you just hope it works when it comes together. And it did!”

— Shelby, The Bride

While I seriously miss our planning sessions, I am so pleased that the McKenzie Phillips Events team was able to help bring her vision to life and throw one effortless celebration for a special couple!

So, without further ado, I’m excited for you to read this recap from the lovable bride herself as we reminisce on this bohemian chic wedding day. A gigantic thanks to Emma of The Bold Americana for being oh-so-freaking talented and sharing some of these heavenly moments with us!

How did you two meet? And, how did he pop the question? Tell us your love story!

Jordan and I met in college at a party over our mutual love of tequila (romantic, right?). We continued to talk and eventually date throughout college, and transition into our professional and post-grad lives together in Kansas City.

We got engaged during a vacation to Seattle. Jordan proposed on a secluded, beautiful beach during a hike. It was romantic, personal and perfect. I loved how intimate the moment was!

Share a few things that helped you along the way with planning a wedding.

The Knot was a huge resource to find vendors in the beginning and get me started. McKenzie was a great vendor resource, and her checklist was my bible for the months leading up to the wedding. And, Pinterest. I’ve never used it more in my life until the wedding, but it was a great resource to get ideas!

Where did you allocate the most funds?

Floral arrangements. Floral was very important to me from the beginning and I allocated a large portion of my budget to make sure my wedding was dripping in flowers. It was executed beautifully.

And, the least?

Bridal accessories. I was so in love with my dream dress that I didn't feel the need to go all out on accessories. I ended up opting to wear shoes I already owned because I couldn't find any that I liked (even after buying and returning dozens of shoes). I purchased my veil two weeks before the wedding on Etsy because I knew I was only going to wear it for a short time, so it felt silly to spend a fortune on something I couldn't tell the difference on.

What was totally worth it?

Floral arrangements. We received so many compliments on them. Also, the tent! It was last-minute, but it made a world of difference during the cocktail hour. And, of course, McKenzie. None of this would have been possible without her!

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them.

Music was important to us, and we both carefully curated our playlists with a mix of indie and jazz for the ceremony and cocktail hour. We also worked closely with our band on the song list for the reception and ended up incorporating lots of classic rock. "You Make My Dreams" by Hall & Oates was the underlying theme song.

Did you have something borrowed, something blue, something old, and something new? If so, do tell!

My something borrowed was my grandmother's diamond earrings. My something new was a lace accent that my husband's aunt bought me. My something old was my shoes. And, my something blue was a small beaded embellishment I put on my shoes.

Your best practical advice to a soon-to-be bride.

Wedding planning is hard because you're doing something that you likely haven't done before! I had no idea how to plan a wedding. Planners and past brides can be great resources.

I would suggest nailing down your venue and date before anything else. Everything will follow that and venues book up to a year in advance. Also, figure out your budget and if your family is helping pay. It’s awkward to ask, but knowing what you have to work with sooner than later will set you up for success.

What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together?

We just got back from our honeymoon in Bali, so we are looking forward to taking it easy the rest of the summer now that the wedding craziness is over (very bittersweet). We also need to get some much-needed house projects done that we put on the back burner during wedding planning.

Let us know one thing that WOWed you while working with McKenzie Phillips.

EVERYTHING! But, really her attention to detail and communication with vendors the month of the wedding was amazing!
